This
is probably the best built modern day light duty diesel engine available. Some
will argue with that statement but we know this from experience. It doesn't
matter who is the manufacturer, Ford, Chevy or Dodge Ram there will always be
issues or weak links with a mass produced mechanical apparatus. Here are some
of the most common issues we are seeing with this engine.
THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS ARE:
COOLANT LEAKS:
The
coolant fitting on the turbo will start to leak over time due to heat, cost to
repair is about $500. Another
place that coolant leaks develop are at the right side of the main radiator, we
are not sure the cause of the issue but we know it will cost $1450 to replace
the radiator.
EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR
The
EGT sensors have have high failure rate and cause the check engine light to
come on along with a stop driving message. Ford has extended the warranty
coverage for these sensors to 8 years or 120K miles, if your past that warranty
period it will cost about $280 to fix.
EXHAUST LEAKS:
The exhaust manifold bolts/studs have tendency to break at the #4
and #8 cylinders, our theory on this failure is extreme heat and rapid cooling
cause pressure on the bolts and cause them to snap. This repair requires the
turbo to be removed and possible replacement of exhaust manifolds. Average
repair bill for this fix is $1400
TURBO CHARGER FAILURE
Early model 6.7L turbos (2011-2014) were designed with smaller
housings and have issues of bearing failure due to over speed, these turbos
have a problem producing boost at high altitudes. In 2015 Ford went with a
different style turbo and fixed the issues plus gaining 40 more horsepower,
sorry the new style turbo will not work on the 2011-2014 6.7L. A new turbo is
$3500 installed.
DEF SYSTEM (DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID)
A check engine light on with a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) P20BA
Reductant Heater A Performance. This is the heater in the DEF tank that keeps the fluid from
freezing, unfortunately this requires the replacement of the DEF sending unit
assembly. The cost to do this is $1400
